Emergency Dentist in Leicester
We keep appointments available for urgent dental problems and we will always do everything we can to get you seen as quickly as possible.
What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
A lot of patients hesitate to call because they are not sure whether their problem is serious enough. Our honest answer is this: if it is causing you significant pain, distress or affecting your ability to eat, speak or sleep, it is serious enough. You do not need to be in agony to reach out.
The most common emergencies we see at EverySmile include severe toothache or facial pain not responding to over the counter pain relief, a broken or fractured tooth, a tooth knocked out or displaced following an accident, a lost or broken filling or crown, a dental abscess causing swelling or pain, and bleeding from the mouth that is not settling. If you are in any doubt, call us. We would far rather speak to you and reassure you that it can wait than have you suffering unnecessarily because you were not sure it was worth a call.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency Before You Reach Us
- If a tooth has been knocked out Pick the tooth up by the crown, which is the white visible part, and avoid touching the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline solution. Do not scrub it or let it dry out. If possible, place it back in the socket and hold it gently in position. If that is not possible, store it in milk or hold it between your cheek and gum while you call us and travel to the practice. Time is critical. The sooner a knocked-out tooth is seen by a dentist, the better the chance of saving it.
- If you have severe toothache Take over the counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol as directed and call us as soon as possible. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum as this can cause a chemical burn to the soft tissue. A dental infection will not resolve on its own and the pain will not go away without treatment.
- If you have a broken tooth or lost filling Rinse your mouth gently with warm water and avoid eating on the affected side. Dental wax, available from most pharmacies, can be used to cover a sharp edge temporarily. Call us and we will get you seen as quickly as possible.
- If there is swelling to your face or jaw Facial swelling associated with a dental infection can develop quickly. If the swelling is spreading, affecting your breathing or swallowing, or you feel generally unwell, go to your nearest A&E or call 999 immediately. For swelling that is localised and not affecting your airway, call us straight away.
When Do People Seek Emergency Dental Treatment?
Most patients who come to us in a dental emergency have been aware of a problem for longer than they would like to admit. A toothache that was manageable for a while and has suddenly become impossible to ignore. A filling that has been feeling loose for weeks and has now come out at the worst possible moment. A wisdom tooth that has been causing occasional pain and has finally flared up badly enough to force the issue.
Others arrive after a sudden, unexpected event. A sports injury. A fall. Biting down on something unexpectedly hard. The common thread in almost every case is that the patient wishes they had come in sooner, either to deal with the underlying problem before it became an emergency or to have the peace of mind of knowing it was being properly monitored. If something has been nagging at you, please do not wait until it becomes urgent. An earlier appointment is almost always a simpler one.
The Benefits of Having an Emergency Dentist You Can Rely On
- Same-day appointments for urgent problems We keep appointments available specifically for urgent cases. When something goes wrong, you should not have to spend hours calling round practices hoping someone can fit you in. Call us first.
- Pain relief as the immediate priority Our first goal in any emergency appointment is to get you out of pain as quickly and effectively as possible. Everything else comes after that.
- A full assessment, not just a quick fix An emergency appointment at EverySmile includes a proper clinical assessment of what has gone wrong and why. We treat the immediate problem and give you a clear plan for addressing the underlying cause.
- Sedation available for anxious emergency patients A dental emergency is even more frightening when you already find dental visits difficult. Our principal dentist holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Conscious Sedation and sedation is available for emergency appointments where it is clinically appropriate.
- Clear costs before any treatment begins We will always discuss costs with you before any treatment is carried out. You will never be surprised by a bill at the end of an emergency appointment at EverySmile.
- A practice you can stay with long term Many of our patients came to us first as an emergency and chose to register permanently once they experienced the level of care. An emergency appointment is the beginning of a relationship, not a one-off transaction.
Toothache in Leicester — When to Stop Waiting and Call Us
Toothache is easy to put off, especially when it comes and goes or eases after a painkiller. But persistent toothache is almost always a sign that something needs attention, and the longer it is left the more complex and costly the treatment required tends to become.
We see patients from across Leicester, Groby, Glenfield, Kirby Muxloe and the surrounding areas who have been managing tooth pain for weeks or even months before finally calling us. We completely understand why people put it off, but we would genuinely rather see you early when the solution is simpler. If toothache is keeping you up at night, that is your signal to call.
Dental Abscess in Leicester — Do Not Wait This One Out
A dental abscess is an infection that has spread from a tooth or the surrounding gum into the surrounding tissue. It can cause significant pain, facial swelling, a high temperature and a general feeling of being unwell. Unlike a straightforward toothache, a dental abscess will not resolve without clinical treatment. Antibiotics alone, while sometimes used to manage the infection temporarily, are not a long-term solution.
If you think you might have a dental abscess, please do not wait and hope it improves. The infection can spread and in rare cases can become a medical emergency. Call us straight away and we will prioritise getting you seen. If the swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing at any point, go straight to A&E.
Emergency Dental Care for Nervous Patients in Leicester
A dental emergency is even more frightening when you already find dental visits difficult. The combination of pain, urgency and arriving somewhere unfamiliar can feel completely overwhelming. Our team sees this regularly and is trained to make emergency appointments as calm and supportive as possible.
Sedation is available for emergency appointments where it is clinically appropriate. If anxiety is going to be a factor when you come in, please mention it when you call and we will make sure the right support is in place before you arrive.

We keep urgent appointments available and will always do everything we can to see emergency patients on the same day or as close to it as possible. Call us as early in the day as you can on 0116 350 3322 and our team will find the earliest available slot for you.
Yes. We welcome emergency patients whether they are existing patients or coming to us for the first time. If you are new to EverySmile, an emergency appointment is also a genuine opportunity to see the practice and meet the team, and many of our emergency patients choose to register with us permanently afterwards.
If you have a dental emergency outside of our opening hours, visit NHS 111 online or call 111 for advice and to be directed to the nearest available emergency dental service. For facial swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, go to A&E immediately or call 999.
Emergency appointments at EverySmile are priced clearly and our team will always discuss costs with you before any treatment begins. We will never carry out treatment without your informed consent and a clear understanding of what is involved both clinically and financially.
We are not able to prescribe antibiotics without a clinical examination. This is for your safety. Antibiotics treat the symptoms of a dental infection but do not resolve the underlying cause. Coming in to be seen properly means we can identify exactly what is happening and provide treatment that actually addresses the problem rather than temporarily masking it.
